UPDATES IN DATA PROTECTION LAW: GDPR & DATA PROTECTION ACT 2018Book Now

Speaker: Pamela Keegan B.L.             2.5  GROUP STUDY POINTS

2018 has seen the introduction of one of the most significant and far-reaching pieces of legislation in decades; possibly ever. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) affects companies and organisations across the globe and gives rights to all citizens of the European Union providing them with control over how their personal data is used.

While the rules are universal across member states, there are quite a number of the practical details that the GDPR assigned to each member state to address. The Irish Government did this though the Data Protection Act 2018.

Accordingly, this lecture will consider:

The background and history of data protection

The Irish Data Protection Act 2018

    Rights of data subjects

    Responsibilities of processors and controllers

The legal basis for processing data

   Offences and penalties
